What matters is its actual condition, the strain it has been subjected to and its intended use. Loose surface fibres alone tell you little about whether the rope structure is damaged.<\/p><p><strong>Pay attention to the following during inspection:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>New thin spots, heavy abrasion or visible material loss.<\/li><li>Damaged yarns, opened strands or conspicuous structural changes.<\/li><li>For POSH-Rope, also hardened or melted areas.<\/li><li>Areas subject to particularly frequent stress, such as the middle of the rope.<\/li><\/ul><p>A rope with clearly damaged yarns, material loss or heat damage must no longer be used as a load-bearing rope. The following sections explain the difference between signs of use and damage.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-93deb00 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"93deb00\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Fluff is part of natural rope<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c9a1753 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c9a1753\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Fluffing is completely normal with natural rope. Jute and flax behave slightly differently in this respect.<\/p><p>Friction and movement cause fibres to protrude from jute. They are relatively brittle and tend to break away over time. New jute ropes in particular may therefore fluff noticeably at first.<\/p><p>With flax, protruding fibres tend to remain and settle around the rope with increasing use. Over time, this creates a kind of soft fibre coating around the actual rope structure.<\/p><p>An older flax rope can therefore look considerably fluffier than a new one without being damaged.<\/p><p>A few protruding fibres are therefore no cause for concern.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-52dc932 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"52dc932\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Run the rope through your hands<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b5f75d3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b5f75d3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A complicated inspection is not necessary in everyday use.<\/p><p>Run your ropes through your hands regularly and look at them as you do so. Anyone who often works with the same ropes usually learns their small peculiarities quite quickly.<\/p><p>Production-related joins in the yarn, small thickened areas, loops, individual loose yarn fibres or slight variations in diameter may be present from the outset.<\/p><p>Changes that have appeared more recently are more significant.<\/p><p>Is an area becoming noticeably thinner? Are several yarns visibly damaged? Is a strand opening unusually far, or is material visibly missing?<\/p><p>That is when you should take a closer look.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f32e2ee elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f32e2ee\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Pay particular attention to the middle of the rope<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5d5f5cf elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5d5f5cf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>One area is put under particular strain in many ties: the middle of the rope.<\/p><p>This is where the rope is repeatedly laid, folded, guided and twisted. More pronounced signs of use therefore often appear around the midpoint first.<\/p><p>If the rope structure is still sound there but the middle is already noticeably more worn in than the rest, you can spread the load more evenly in future.<\/p><p>One simple option is to shorten the rope by 20 centimetres or more at one end.<\/p><p>This creates a new midpoint, so the exact same area is not repeatedly strained in subsequent ties.<\/p><p>With frequently used ropes, you can shift this midpoint again over time.<\/p><p>Of course, this does not repair an area that is actually damaged. If yarns or strands are already clearly damaged, the affected section must be assessed separately and cut out if necessary.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c9019f2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c9019f2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Signs of use or actual damage?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-248946f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"248946f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A soft, fuzzy and well broken-in natural fibre rope can remain a perfectly good bondage rope for a long time.<\/p><p>It becomes more critical when the damage affects the yarns or strands themselves, rather than just the surface fibres.<\/p><p>Examples include clearly worn-through areas, damaged yarns, substantial material loss or a severely altered rope structure in one spot.<\/p><p>That means not every worn area automatically means:<\/p><p>Throw the rope away.<\/p><p>What matters is the extent of the damage.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-854681e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"854681e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">A long rope can become a shorter one<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aa9feaf elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"aa9feaf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If the damage is clearly limited to a small area, the affected section can be cut out with a generous margin.<\/p><p>An 8-metre rope may then become a shorter rope that can still be put to good use.<\/p><p>You should then reassess what the remaining rope is still suitable for.<\/p><p>We would apply much stricter standards, especially to load-bearing ropes used for suspensions.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-50d868a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"50d868a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">And what about POSH-Rope?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-01d06dd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"01d06dd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Our POSH-Rope is made of polyester and behaves differently from natural fibre rope as it wears.<\/p><p>POSH also becomes slightly softer and more supple with regular use. This is not a problem in itself.<\/p><p>With polyester, however, heat generated by friction is particularly important.<\/p><p>Strong rope-on-rope friction can generate heat and damage the synthetic fibres. Direct friction between POSH-Rope and POSH-Rope should therefore be avoided, especially in suspensions.<\/p><p>For redirects, we therefore use a suitable carabiner between the ropes. This allows the rope to run over metal instead of directly over another rope.<\/p><p>With POSH, pay particular attention to obvious abrasion and to areas that are hardened, melted or otherwise altered by heat.<\/p><p>We would no longer use a POSH-Rope with visible abrasion or heat damage for suspensions.<\/p><p>A small knot can also occasionally occur within the yarn of a polyester rope. These joins may arise during yarn production or winding when a yarn has had to be extended.<\/p><p>A small yarn knot like this is therefore not automatically wear damage.<\/p><p>As with our natural fibre ropes, it is important to distinguish here as well:<\/p><p>Has this area always been there, or has actual damage occurred through use?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6da486a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6da486a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Take a closer look when using ropes for suspensions<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a9d85c5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a9d85c5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There should be no doubt about the condition of a rope intended to support body weight.<\/p><p>This applies to both natural fibre ropes and POSH-Rope.<\/p><p>If yarns are clearly damaged, material is visibly missing, or a polyester rope shows abrasion or heat damage, that rope should no longer be used as a load-bearing rope.<\/p><p>This does not necessarily mean that it must be discarded immediately.<\/p><p>A natural fibre rope, for example, can be shortened and then used for other ties.<\/p><p>The key is to ensure that any further use is appropriate for the rope's condition.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2877b21 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2877b21\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">A Bondage rope does not have a fixed expiry date.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f268b5e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f268b5e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div><p>You cannot make a blanket statement that:<\/p>\n<p>A rope must be replaced after one year.<\/p>\n<p>Nor is there a fixed number of ties after which a rope must automatically be retired.<\/p>\n<p>A heavily used rope can wear out faster than one used only occasionally. Load, friction, storage and care also play a part.<\/p>\n<p>The rope's actual condition is therefore more important than its age.<\/p>\n<p>A well broken-in jute or flax rope in particular can become especially pleasant over time.<\/p>\n<p>It can become softer, shed fibres and look different from the first day.<\/p>\n<p>Signs of use and wear damage are not the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>The entire article can therefore be summed up quite simply:<\/p>\n<p>Neither age nor a few loose fibres determine whether a bondage rope is still suitable; what matters is the condition of its actual rope structure.<\/p>\n<p>You can also consult our <a href=\"https:\/\/bavarian-bondage.de\/en\/pflegetipps-fuer-deine-seile\/\">tips for cleaning, care and storage<\/a>.
